According to the Dispatch on Sunday Sep 9, 1984, there was a British
car show on the levee in LeClaire Park, Davenport. The weather was uncooperative
but there were 35 cars on display. Some of the cars shown were a '50 MG TF,
Jaguar XKE, '67 Austin Cooper Mini S and a '46 MG TC. The show was
sponsored by the Quad-Cities MG Club. Also, it said that some members of the
organization are thinking about starting a local British car club. The Quad-City British Auto Club
was organized in 1987 and the
current president was Darrel McNeil. The club was organized by Tim Moore, an MG
owner, and Bob Kirk, a Jaguar owner. Both belonged to separate car clubs for
specific makes of British cars, but because both club meetings were sparsely
attended, the men decided to combine owners of different types of British cars
into one larger group. It also provides a wider base of information for finding
parts sources, repair information and restoration services.
The club was also formed to promote interest, and usage of any, and all British cars. We do this through events that we hold throughout the year. Every month, we hold a dinner social meeting at various locations in the Quad-Cities area. We have other events such as organized drives in the country-side. For information on joining our club, go here. For a look at a .pdf version of our April 2006 newsletter, go here.
Our premier event is one that we have held for over 17 years, and that would be the Heartland British Autofest. It is held right around the 3rd weekend in August. Our local NBC affiliate, KWQC has even been nice enough to invite us to be a part of their Saturday morning show on several occasions.
On Saturday, we generally do a drive and dinner. Sunday we do the auto show and it is held in the Village of East Davenport, IA. Judging will be done by the participants. Along with the class awards there will be a Best of Show and Long Distance award.
The Village of East Davenport offers local pubs in which you can have your favorite beverage and good food. Also, there are many local shops in which you may browse and possibly find that unique item that you have been looking for.
In 1999, the weather was excellent on Saturday, and Sunday. Attendance was down a little, but that would most likely be attributed to the Healy groups meet in the Devil's Head Lake area. In 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004 the weather was downright fantastic! In 2003, the weather was hot and humid, but thankfully there was no rain. In 2005, the summer had been VERY hot and humid. Luckily, the weather changed a couple of days before our event, so the weather again was excellent. We had a nice turn-out, with my guess being somewhere around 80 cars. I base this guess on the number of pictures I took. In 2006, it was a bit warm in the 80's. The rain Gods were kind to us once again. In 2007, the weather was EXTREMELY hot, in the mid-90's, with heat index over 100. This was the hottest I can remember the weather ever being, which was most likely responsible for a slightly lower event attendance.
